If you give it a sitemap, it counts every URL, samples a handful of pages, and projects an average across the rest. For a single page or pasted text it estimates directly – about 4 characters per token.
Is the count exact?
No – it's an estimate, not a billing number. Different models tokenize text differently, so treat the result as a sizing guide for how big a knowledge base would be.
