What does the sitemap validator check?
It confirms the document is a valid <urlset> or <sitemapindex>, then checks each entry for a proper <loc> URL, valid W3C <lastmod> dates, allowed <changefreq> keywords, and <priority> values between 0.0 and 1.0. It also flags files that exceed 50,000 URLs or 50 MB.
What is the difference between an error and a warning?
Errors are spec violations that can break indexing – a missing loc, an invalid document type, or exceeding the size limits. Warnings are softer issues like malformed lastmod dates or out-of-range priorities that search engines usually tolerate but you should still fix.
